چکیده

LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is a tool designed for libraries to use to ensure their community's continued access to web-published scientific journals. LOCKSS allows libraries to take custody of the material to which they subscribe, in the same way they do for paper, and to preserve it. By preserving it they ensure that, for their community, links and searches continue to resolve to the published material even if it is no longer available from the publisher. Think of it as the digital equivalent of stacks where an authoritative copy of material is always available rather than the digital equivalent of an archive. LOCKSS allows libraries to run web caches for specific journals. These caches collect content as it is published and are never flushed. They cooperate in a peer-to-peer network to detect and repair damaged or missing pages. The caches run on generic PC hardware using open-source software and require almost no skilled administration, making the cost of preserving a journal manageable. LOCKSS is currently being tested at 40+ libraries worldwide with the support of 30+ publishers. Permanent Web Publishing

LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is a prototype of a system to preserve access to scientific journals published on the Web. It is a majority-voting fault-tolerant system that, unlike normal systems, has far more replicas than would be required just to survive the anticipated failures. We are exploring techniques that exploit the surplus of replicas to permit a much looser form of coordin...

LOCKSS: Building Permanent Access for E-Journals - Practical Steps Towards and Affordable, Cooperative, E-Preservation, and E-Archivingprogram

The decentralized, cooperative, preservation and archiving model embodied in the LOCKSS Program capitalizes on the traditional roles of libraries and publishers. The open source software enables institutions to locally collect, store, preserve, and archive web based journals thus safeguarding their community’s access to that content. The model enforces the publisher’s access control systems and...

Preserving Peer Replicas By Rate-Limited Sampled Voting in LOCKSS

The LOCKSS project has developed and deployed in a worldwide test a peer-to-peer system for preserving access to journals and other archival information published on the Web. It consists of a large number of independent, low-cost, persistent web caches that cooperate to detect and repair damage to their content by voting in “opinion polls.” Based on this experience, we present a design for and ...

RDFa as a Lightweight Metadata Interoperability Layer between Repository Software and LOCKSS

Semantic Web and Linked Data standards have recently been gaining momentum in the library domain. It seems more likely than not that future systems used in library environments will make increasing use of these standards. This paper outlines possible usage scenarios of semantic metadata in the LOCKSS digital preservation software generally, and the possibilities for metadata interoperability be...

The UK LOCKSS Pilot Programme: A Perspective from the LOCKSS Technical Support Service

Over the last decade libraries have increasingly shifted journal access from print to digital. The preference of users for online content, the demand of readers for a broader range of content, and the rising costs of library shelf space all contributed to bringing about this change. A variety of approaches has emerged to support access to these digital journals. The common ones require librarie...
